FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need to buy any new hardware?

No. Tensile works with the Apple Watch you already own, reading the workouts, heart rate, HRV, breathing rate and sleep it already records through Apple Health.

How is Tensile different from Whoop or Oura?

Two things they structurally cannot do. A new band starts you at zero and makes you wait about a month for a baseline, while Tensile reads back every workout, night and resting heart rate your watch has already recorded, so you get a verdict on your own history on day one. And Tensile runs its findings through a false discovery rate correction, then deletes the ones that fail instead of showing them to you as trends. It also needs no new hardware and no second subscription.

What if a finding does not hold up?

Then you never see it. Look hard enough at any dataset and something always looks meaningful by pure luck, so every pattern Tensile finds is tested and corrected for the number of tests run. A typical week might test 13 ideas about you and keep 2. The other 11 are deleted rather than presented as insights. Findings stay correlational, never causal, and Tensile makes no medical or diagnostic claims. Read how we measured this.

What happens to my health data?

It syncs from Apple Health to your private Tensile account, encrypted in transit and at rest, so your dashboards and coach are ready the moment you open the app. You approve exactly what Tensile can read when you sign up. Your data is used to coach you and for nothing else: never sold, never shared with advertisers. Deleting your account deletes the data with it.

Where do the benchmarks come from?

Fitness age and percentile ranks use published cohort tables for VO2 max and resting heart rate, matched to your age band and sex from Apple Health. Everything else is measured against your own baseline.
